Follow Safe Food Handling Practices

As you prepare holiday meals, keep yourself and your family safe from food-related illness. Wash hands and surfaces often. Avoid cross-contamination by keeping raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs (including their juices) away from ready-to-eat foods and eating surfaces. Cook foods to the proper temperature. Refrigerate promptly. Do not leave perishable foods out for more than two hours.

Dress for the Elements and Stay Warm

Cold temperatures can cause serious health problems, especially in infants and older adults. Stay dry, and dress warmly in several layers of loose-fitting, tightly woven clothing.

The holiday season is full of goodies. Try to balance the sugary treats with healthier options from the vegetable tray.

Maintain Not Gain

People gain an average of 1-2 lbs every holiday season. This becomes problematic when they fail to loose it during the year and the excess weight adds up over time. Watch your diet and find ways to exercise more. Shovel snow, take a walk, get moving.

Don't Drink and Drive

1 in 3 crash deaths involves a drunk driver. Make plans so that you don’t have to drive after drinking. Prior to any drinking, designate a non-drinking driver when with a group and don’t let your friends drive impaired. If you have been drinking, get a ride home or call a taxi. If you are hosting a party where alcohol will be served, remind your guests to plan ahead and designate their sober driver; offer alcohol-free beverages; and make sure all guests leave with a sober driver.

Manage Stress

Don’t turn into the Abominable Snowman this year. The holidays don’t need to take a toll on your health and pocketbook. Keep your commitments and spending in check. Balance work, home, and play. Get support from family and friends. Keep a relaxed and positive outlook. Make sure to get proper sleep.
