What is HIPAA?
HIPAA is the acronym for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.
Passage of the act provided additional protection and privacy for Protected Health Information (PHI) of individuals. It is the intent of the Union County Health Department (UCHD) to abide by the spirit of the provisions of HIPAA in the maintenance and transmittal of all PHI gathered by the Health Department. Currently, UCHD is attempting to comply with the rules of HIPAA under the deadlines established by the act: Electronic Transmission Compliance by October 14, 2002 and Privacy/ Security by April 14, 2003 .
