Child Passenger Safety Week/Overtime Law Enforcement

The Marysville Police Department and the Union County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting an overtime enforcement ‘blitz’ to remind drivers to slow down, buckle up, and to keep their children safe by having them properly restrained. Officers are keenly aware of their role in preventing unintentional childhood injury.

National Child Passenger Safety Week (February 9-16) marks the year for programs which attempt to insure that all children in Union County are properly restrained while riding.

Currently, Ohio law requires restraints for children under 4 years of age and 40 pounds regardless of seat position in the car. In addition, neglecting child safety restraint use is a primary offense.

As explained by Amy Reinhard, Union County Health Department’s Safe Communities/Safe Kids Coordinator, "It means that an officer may pull you over if they notice a violation . . . in fact, law enforcement across the country are making passenger safety a priority."

The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration concur that the proper use of a child safety seat can prevent serious injury and death in 7 out of 10 car crashes.

To determine if your car seat is being properly used, trained child safety seat technicians will be available on February 8th at the Marysville Fire Department from 10 am – 1:30 pm. This service is free and no appointment is needed.
